The adaptive community - consisting of individuals with limb loss, paralysis and other physical adaptations - often faces daunting hurdles when it comes to participating in sports and physical activity.
LIMBitless helps people soar over those hurdles.
The organization just outside of Boise, Idaho, provides opportunities for this resilient community to connect with others who share their unique perspective, along with resources that can dramatically change lives.
The goal is to expand the horizons of what is possible for participants, and engage the local community through awareness and interaction, according to Travis Fullmer of Boise River Insurance in Meridian, Idaho. Boise River Insurance regularly provides volunteers for LIMBitless, and Fullmer has been an integral part of the organization since its inception. He currently serves as president of the organization and its board of directors.
"We already were working with adaptive athletes on fundraising, events and ways to give back in the community," he said, "and we wanted to establish a way for these inspiring people to help others in similar situations, including wounded veterans."
Programs offered by LIMBitless, including the organization's showcase event, the LIMBitless Challenge, served approximately 300 people last year, according to founder and executive director Ronald Kern.
The first challenge took place last June, with 17 adaptive teams making a hike to the top of Table Rock in Boise. The event included 11 wheelchair teams, and each wheelchair participant received a FreeWheel attachment that offers increased mobility both in everyday life and during recreational activities.
Eventually, Kern said, the goal is to host a LIMBitless Challenge in every state, encouraging adaptive individuals around the country to "Go Beyond."
A 2017 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award will help. The honor, earned by Fullmer for his dedication to building a stronger community, comes with a $10,000 donation to LIMBitless from Safeco on behalf of Boise River Insurance.
"This donation will ensure that the 2017 LIMBitless Challenge is another huge success," Kern said. "It can fund nearly 15 FreeWheels, which aren't covered by insurance, or even 100 computers and other technical resources as part of our Tech for Vets program that serves wounded veterans."
Fullmer, who is involved in all aspects of fundraising, public relations and event coordination for LIMBitless - and also volunteers with other community organizations - agreed. "It's an honor just to play a part in helping to improve people's lives," he said, "and this donation will have a significant impact."
