Brad Cavnar's commitment to community started with his dad.
"My father was a big advocate of giving back," he said, "so it came naturally to me." Now the owner of CavnarSmith Insurance Agency in Southlake, Texas, Cavnar's involvement with area nonprofits stretches back more than 20 years.
Cavnar has been on the board of trustees for Metroport Meals On Wheels (MMOW) since 2013, serving as treasurer for the Roanoke, Texas, organization that provides home-delivered meals, community luncheons, and other support services for seniors.
"We are neighbors helping neighbors," said Mary King, executive director of MMOW, which was founded in 1980. "We alleviate hunger, isolation, and loneliness in our communities, fostering the worth, dignity, and independence of each individual we serve."
Cavnar and other board members actively represent the nonprofit every day. "Whether it is stocking the food pantry, delivering meals, volunteering for the golf tournament, or making calls for donations on behalf of MMOW," he said, "I will do it all."
Last year, MMOW programs provided seniors with more than 75,000 meals - a massive undertaking, especially considering that the organization doesn't receive any public funding. Instead, all support comes from private donations and volunteers; as more than 600 people across three counties work with MMOW on a regular basis.

"I've never been afraid to ask for support," Cavnar said. "I have a lot of contacts and friends in the area, so I ask them for donations. But they ask me, too - it's never a one-way street."
MMOW helps make sure seniors aren't on a one-way street, either. "We help combat isolation by forming enduring relationships with participants," King said. "This alleviates one of the greatest fears these seniors have - the loss of independence and being forced to move to a care facility - and enables them to age with dignity in their own homes."
The efforts of Cavnar and MMOW have earned a 2017 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award - which comes with up to a $10,000 donation to Metroport Meals On Wheels from Safeco on behalf of CavnarSmith Insurance Agency.
That $10,000 can provide a year's worth of meals for nine seniors who could not otherwise afford them, King said.
"The most rewarding part is simply being able to help those that are in need," Cavnar added. "MMOW plays an incredibly important role in the lives of these seniors."
