The things that make Utah County, Utah, a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts - tall mountains, steep cliffs, endless trails, swift rivers, and more - also make it possible for people to find themselves in great danger.

Like the paraglider who got stuck on a cliff about 400 feet off the ground. Or the hunter who went missing after falling off a ledge and breaking his leg.

Utah County Search and Rescue volunteers saved both. About 130 times a year, when the unexpected happens, they spring into action - and odds are, Brandon Scott will be with them.

A UTV fell in an abandoned mine shaft the operator couldn't see. The patient fell another 50 feet below the UTV. Volunteer Brent Johnson secures the UTV to pull it up and get down to the patient.

Scott, the principal broker for Insure Pro in Draper, Utah, has been involved with the volunteer unit (part of the Utah County Sheriff's Office) for three years. He is on the board of directors and serves as Quartermaster, handling inventory such as gear and medical supplies.

"I personally make it to about 50% of the calls we get," Scott said, noting that he spends about 200-300 hours a year responding to emergencies and participating in training.

Serving takes more just than time and dedication - it requires Scott and other team members to invest their own resources in gear, gas and even annual dues to the Mountain Rescue Association.

It's an investment Scott is happy to make. "I was an avid outdoors person, and I wanted to volunteer my time back to the community," he said. "This was a great fit for my love of the outdoors and helping people."

Scott's efforts also make him a great fit for a 2017 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award. The honor comes with up to a $10,000 donation to Utah County Search and Rescue from Safeco on behalf of Insure Pro.

"This money will go a long way toward helping purchase new gear, including helmets, boots, gloves and the Scarab rescue tools we use," according to Toby Norton, president of the board of directors and a fireman/paramedic in nearby American Fork. "While the situations we put ourselves into can be dangerous, we never act without the proper safety equipment - which is why contributions like this are so important."

Other contributions in the community are important, too - which is why Insure Pro and Scott have supported a variety of causes in the past, such as the Children's Miracle Network.

"We live by a Zig Ziglar saying," Scott said: "'You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.'"
