Help SELCO Insurance Services earn an even larger donation to American Cancer Society. If their story is shared on social media 50 or more times Aug. 28-Sept. 1, American Cancer Society will receive an additional $5,000. Use the buttons and help them reach their goal!

"Volunteering isn't just a way for us to get involved. It's part of SELCO's identity," according to Tim Kelley, insurance services operations administrator for the Springfield, Oregon, company.

For more than 20 years, SELCO Community Credit Union and SELCO Group - the company's insurance division - have been supporting the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life.

SELCO employees walk in the relay itself, and also participate in a vast number of different fundraisers leading up to the event. The effort is so massive that it requires the company's main coordinators, Abbey Cummings, Christi Shaw, and Sarah Means, to start planning six months in advance.

Each year SELCO provides volunteers to help at event registration. Event Registration welcomes thousands of people into the event. Pictured l-r, Kristina LeMoigne, Abbi Waltz and Jaynalee Waldrip.

"They take this really seriously," said Kristen Salladay, senior community manager for the American Cancer Society in Eugene. "SELCO's support means the world. They're a powerful group of effective business leaders, and it's an honor for them to choose us as a partner."

It's a lot of work, but well worth it. "I think it's safe to say that cancer has touched everyone at SELCO in some way, several of our co-workers are survivors themselves, while others have loved ones who have faced cancer," Shaw said. "We need to do everything we can to support patients, while also funding research into a cure."

The RFL event runs from one day to the next and SELCO has become famous for providing glow sticks for night-time fun. They give out hundreds of glow sticks and participants know to come to their tent site for this fun gift.

"That's what Relay For Life is all about," Salladay said. "We are making a difference! When the American Cancer Society started in 1913, only one out of every 10 people diagnosed with cancer would survive. Now, two out of three do. We won't stop until three out of three survive."

SELCO's support of that fight is about to get a big boost, thanks to a 2017 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award. The honor comes with up to a $10,000 donation from Safeco to the American Cancer Society on behalf of SELCO.

"That money will go a long way," Salladay said. Just last year in Lane County, the American Cancer Society provided nearly 150 residents with lodging support for out-of-town treatment, helped give rides to and from treatment to more than 650 people, and supplied free wigs, scarves and other items to more than 700 patients. A toll-free number also provides information and support to callers 24 hours a day.

"We're really fortunate to be part of a company that believes in making the community stronger," Shaw said. "SELCO doesn't just provide financial support, they actively encourage every employee to participate in causes that are important to them."
